Overview

This Guide lists companies worldwide that are involved in the business of stem cell research. Besides companies actively developing stem cell-based therapeutics, the Guide lists for-profit umbilical cord blood stem cell banks as well as companies that provide supplies and services to stem cell researchers. More than 200 companies are included -- 206 to be exact! We do not claim that this is the definitive list of stem cell research firms. Companies (and executives) come and go all the time, while others refocus their corporate strategies toward nearer term product goals for financial reasons, etc. It's also important to point out that larger pharmaceutical and biotech firms are performing stem cell-related research intramurally in isolated business units or in partnerships with younger, smaller firms. Examples of this phenomenon include StemCells, Inc.'s acquisition of Stem Cell Sciences, Inc., and PerkinElmer's acquisition of ViaCell, Inc. Partnerships also abound. Pfizer agreed to commercialize a stem cell product (Multistem) with Athersys, Inc., of Cleveland, Ohio. Other examples of these relationships include Novo Nordisk's (Denmark) collaboration with Sweden's Cellartis on stem cell treatments for diabetes; Johnson & Johnson's investments in Novocell and Tengion (East Norriton, Pa.); GlaxoSmithKline's investment in Harvard University's stem cell institute; and Novartis's and Roche's investments in Cellerix (Spain). This volume contains information about the big pharmaceutical entities only sporadically and referentially. Nevertheless, the Guide's comprehensive listings contain accurate contact information, up-to-date lists of senior management, overviews of corporate missions and research activities, and Web links to financial/funding/investor pages and corporate news pages, where available. Companies are listed alphabetically within major market, product or research category.
