He was head of the excavations in the Gudme area from 1991–2001. From 1995–1998 he held a research grant from the Danish Research Council, which formed the basis of this book. Mads Dengsø Jessen is a senior researcher at the National Museum of Denmark. He completed his PhD at Arhus University (2011), focusing on the changes that can be observed in the ritual environments during the Christianisation of South Scandinavia.
