Overview

All Miaow wants is to enjoy his peaceful, solitary life as a temple guardian catching mice. But when the Jade Emperor invites all creatures on Earth to compete in a Great Race, the reserved cat finds himself reluctantly entering - and worse, socialising! Spirited and fiery, shapeshifter Ming is Miaow's polar opposite, and she's determined to make him her new best friend. But she hadn't counted on Miaow making other friends too. As the race heats up, things start to unravel . . . Can the pair (and their friendship) make it to the finish line? The first in a light-hearted, action-packed new series, MING AND MIAOW'S GREAT RACE is perfect for fans of YOMI AND THE FURY OF NINKI NANKA, TIGER WARRIOR, Laura Ellen Anderson and SPELLCASTERS.

Reviews

Absolutely loved this younger fiction by debut Eric Huang and Phùng Nguyên Quang. Funny, charming, warm and pacy with a disaster child of a ninetail fox, a grumpy cat and gods who love paperwork and dumplings (respectively). -- Louie Stowell, author of LOKI: A BAD GOD'S GUIDE TO BEING GOOD A brilliant, action-packed retelling of the Chinese zodiac legend that had me cheering on Ming and Miaow across every page. Packed with mythical creatures, tricky challenges, and firey close calls, you'll want to race through this book in a single sitting - which is exactly what I did! -- Siobhan McDermott, author of PAPER DRAGONS Guardians of the New Moon is a wonderful series, full of mythical creatures and legends. Don't miss out! Read it now! -- Maisie Chan, author of the TIGER WARRIOR series Fun, fresh, and fantastically exciting, this tale of a race like no other will keep you cheering to the last page. -- Sinéad O’Hart, author of LOLA AND LARCH Action-packed and pacey, the Guardians of the New Moon series is an excellent read for those who love East Asian fantasy and lore. Filled with adventure and clever word-play, this series will have young readers chuckling with delight and glee. -- Eva Wong Nava, author of EAST ASIAN FOLKTALES, MYTHS AND LEGENDS With a menagerie of magical creatures, unpredictable divinities, fantastical lands to discover and Quang's richly detailed illustrations, these delightfully light-hearted and easy-to read-adventures are sure to fascinate and inspire young readers while introducing the lunar new year and other fascinating East Asian traditions and folklore. * Lancashire Post * The full-and-partial-page illustrations in both books are wonderfully energetic and expressive and complement the narrative perfectly.A wonderfully exciting, action-packed new adventure series for readers of 7+ who I have no doubt will enjoy meeting the Guardians as they venture with the animals of the Chinese zodiac. * Book Craic Blogger * With action aplenty and lots of dramatic illustrations these stories are just right for readers gaining confidence in lower KS2 as well as for reading aloud around the time of the Chinese New Year * Red Reading Hub * A wonderful story of friendship, collaboration, perseverance and adventure. * ReadingZone * Wonderful and vibrant storytelling! I can't wait to read more in the series! -- Maisie Chan, author of the TIGER WARRIOR series

Author Information

Eric Huang has always been fascinated by legends and lore. As a boy, he was determined to find real-life dragons, so he studied palaeontology at university. Reality didn't live up to his Jurassic Park dreams, though, and he found himself working as secretary at Disney Publishing, launching a career in children's books. Eric lives in London with his boyfriend Brian and cat McNulty. He's a podcaster, writer, and lecturer at City University of London's Masters in Publishing programme. Phùng Nguyên Quang is an illustrator - picture book author based in Saigon, Vietnam. He creates his stunning artwork using a mix of watercolour, acrylic and digital. His works are inspired by the folk culture of Vietnam and Asia.
