Currently he is Professor and Head of DRTC. He was Head of the Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore Centre from October 2002 to September 2007. After having completed his B.Sc. in Mathematics and Statistics from the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, Udupi in 1968, Professor Rao obtained his Master's degree in Statistics and Diploma in Computer Science from the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta.
