He was Head of the Department of Educational Science there until 2020. Harring spent five years as Director of the Center for Childhood and Youth Research at the University of Bielefeld (2010-2014). He earned his doctorate at the University of Bremen in the field of leisure settings of young people in deprived areas. Joining Friedrich Ebert Stiftung-youth studies in Global East as chairman of advisory board since 2016 – starting in Eastern Europe (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Croatia, North Macedonia, Romania and Serbia), continuing in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Currently leading the scientific advice in the Visegrád-countries, the Baltic states and Southeastern Europe. His research focuses on empirical youth, school and socialization research, formal, informal and non-formal education in and outside of school, teacher education, mixed methods.
