Overview

""They were desperate times but the Depression created a certain breed of people who economised, 'made-do', and 'got-by' without spending much money, eventually surviving those difficult times."" Growing up in the 1930s is the first-hand recollections of a young Australian boy's life during the Great Depression in Newcastle in the 1930s as told by a now old man with a long memory. It records the daily life and times, keeping alive an era that otherwise may be forgotten.

Reviews

""It was a delightful walk with you through the 1930's in your new book, Growing up in the 1930's. You have drawn on a life well lived to reveal your fond family memories, enhanced by black line drawings. Every generation since could take a leaf from your book."" Judith Flitcroft, author of Walk Back in Time. ""A remarkably accurate, detailed and comprehensive reminiscence of a period of difficult and formative struggle in Australian life. Frugality and innovation were hallmarks of most of that generation. Written in a sympathetic and readable style that lends itself to easy reading."" Phillip Rosewarne, author of Beyond His Station
