Green iguanas are native to a vast geographical range extending from southern Mexico through Central America, including countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama, and into northern and central South America, including Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. Within these regions, they occupy tropical rainforests, mangrove swamps, riverbanks, and areas near lakes or streams. These habitats provide both arboreal and semi-aquatic environments, which are critical for their feeding, thermoregulation, and predator avoidance strategies. Arboreality is a defining trait of the species. Green iguanas are highly adapted to life in trees, where they feed on foliage, fruits, flowers, and occasionally small invertebrates. Their prehensile tails, elongated toes with sharp claws, and strong limb musculature allow them to maneuver efficiently among branches, leap across gaps, and escape predators when necessary. Green iguanas are diurnal, meaning they are active during daylight hours, and rely heavily on basking in sunlight to regulate body temperature and facilitate digestion.
