FRANCIS D.K. CHING, an architect and Professor Emeritusat the University of Washington, recently retired after more than35 years of teaching. He is the bestselling author of BuildingConstruction Illustrated, among other books on architecture anddesign, all published by Wiley. His works have been translated intomore than 16 languages and are regarded as classics for theirrenowned graphic presentations. IAN M. SHAPIRO is the founder and co-owner of TaitemEngineering in Ithaca, New York, an award-winning consulting firmhe founded in 1989. He has been a visiting lecturer at CornellUniversity, Tompkins-Cortland Community College, and SyracuseUniversity. He has worked on several LEED building design projects, has led a variety of energy conservation research projects, and isa frequent contributor to ASHRAE Journal and Home Energymagazine.
