OverviewGreen Aging Green Aging presents a rigorous, integrative framework for improving quality of life in later life. Drawing on evidence from nutrition science, lifestyle medicine, gerontology, public health, and clinical practice, it reframes aging as an ecological process shaped by interactions among biology, behavior, environment, and care systems. Rather than offering prescriptive rules or one-size-fits-all solutions, Green Aging provides a structured approach for understanding what influences functional capacity, safety, autonomy, and meaning in older adults-and how these factors can be addressed responsibly in real-world contexts. Designed for clinicians, caregivers, policymakers, and interested readers, this book distinguishes clearly between scientific evidence and practical application. It emphasizes proportionality, feasibility, and ethical use, acknowledging uncertainty where evidence is mixed and prioritizing informed choice. Green Aging is not an alternative to medicine. It is a companion framework-one that supports better decisions, safer aging, and improved quality of life. The Authors Zoheir Abouguendia, the senior author, is a plant scientist and ecological researcher with extensive experience in applied research, systems thinking, and evidence synthesis. With academic training in agriculture, botany, and plant sciences, and professional experience spanning research management, interdisciplinary collaboration, and science communication, his work bridges biological science, human health, and real-world decision-making. Zoheir is continuing his volunteer work in related Health Canada Consultation Programs. His interest in aging and quality of life reflects a long-standing focus on how complex systems-biological, environmental, and social-interact to shape outcomes. Green Aging builds on this perspective, integrating scientific evidence with ethical and practical considerations relevant to older adults, caregivers, clinicians, and policymakers. After completing a BSc in Agriculture, Zoheir carried out his graduate studies in three North American universities obtaining an MSc and PhD. The main contributor to this work is Mona Abouguendia who obtained a BSc and MSc in Psychology from the U of Saskatchewan and University of Alberta, respectively, with further training in Edmonton, Alberta. She has several years of research and practice, mostly in Edmonton.
