OverviewThis collection of the world's greatest disasters begins with the Black Plague of 1347-1351 and ends with the nuclear catastrophe at Chernobyl in 1986, and includes such well-known catastrophes as the eruption of Mount St Helens, the sinking of the Titanic, the San Francisco earthquake and fire, a tragic airship crash, a calamitous circus holocaust, an unexpected hurricane, a disastrous flood, a horrendous theatre fire, and the sudden destruction of a town and a spaceship. The similarity between some of these events is discussed in terms of the lives of the people involved in them. Many facets of the human condition emerged, and heroes and heroines, villains and villainesses were revealed. Each account of a disaster is followed first by a reproducible activity, and then by a series of study tasks, which include critical thinking skills, for classroom, home and library.
