Overview

What does it mean to truly love someone? Someone you've secretly been in love with for six years... Especially when that someone struggles with mental illness... Quirky and outspoken Carrington Daughtler chose to live a writer's life in New York over a prestigious graduate degree in psychology, disappointing her mother once again despite Cari becoming a number one bestselling poet. Needing a change of hairstyle and scenery, Cari moves to Baltimore, where she plans to complete her latest poetry collection. Unexpectedly, she reconnects with some college friends, including Abel Harpen, with whom she's been secretly in love for six years. Gray Matter is a novel filled with humor and heartache that not only answers the question about loving someone with mental health challenges but erases the stigma surrounding them.

Reviews

Gray Matter is an emotional story that goes above and beyond what I hope for in a book. With hilarious banter, a heart-wrenching theme, and strong bonds of friendship, this book made it to my favorites list within the first few chapters. Kimberly Patton, author of The Knowing In Gray Matter, Avery Volz's vivid descriptions and immersive storytelling pull readers deep into the characters' lives, capturing the raw emotions of early adulthood. The narrative skillfully portrays the angst of navigating choices, opportunities, and the uncertain hopes that define this stage of life. It also delves into the power of first love, exploring what love truly means in a time of growth and self-discovery. Through its exploration of mental health, the book effectively advocates for awareness across the spectrum of suffering, offering an empathetic portrayal that resonates long after the final page. Ashley Cournoyer-Smith, school psychologist andauthor of My Body Knows. Do I Know?

Author Information

Avery Volz knew she wanted to be an author when she received her first journal at the tender age of eight. Today, she studies psychology at Penn State York and juggles three clubs, sixteen credits, and research-all in addition to writing! A mental health advocate, she loves writing about characters who struggle with their mental health to raise awareness and squash the stigma. She is also a world-renowned hip-hop dancer, dog lover, and avid reader. She currently lives in Pennsylvania. Gray Matter is her third novel. As the founder and chief inspiration officer of Highlander Press, Deborah Kevin loves helping change-makers tap into and share their stories of healing and truth. She's guided hundreds of authors to craft and publish impactful books. She's the host of the STORYTELLHER podcast, where she's elevating women's voices, one story at a time. She's trekked the Camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrimage ending in Santiago, Spain, and lives in Maryland with the love of her life, Rob, their sons, and their puppy Fergus-that is when they're not off discovering the world.
