OverviewThis book is a comprehensive guide to the complex task of administering a general surgery residency program. Leading a general surgery residency program is a unique challenge that requires specialized knowledge in accreditation and curriculum development, as well as program growth and development. Hence, this guide will be of great use to the leadership of general surgery residency programs. This volume is designed to assist the leadership of general surgery residency programs in many areas, such as: understanding the necessary structure and programming required for GME training in general surgery; obtaining and maintaining program accreditation with the ACGME; developing best practices for resident assessment and evaluation; growth and development of didactic and clinical training experiences; implementation of necessary policies and procedures to ensure a thriving clinical learning environment; addressing recent changes in Competency-Based Assessment with the evolution of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs); and structuring a curriculum that teaches technical and non-technical skills. Chapters also cover best practices in resident recruitment, resident and faculty wellbeing, faculty development, and resident remediation, amongst other topics. Graduate Medical Education in General Surgery is intended for leaders in academic and non-academic settings who are interested in developing, managing, or improving new or existing general surgery residency programs. The book also will also appeal to trainees and those interested in general surgery residency or academic surgery as well as administrators in any setting where medical education or graduate medical education is being offered or considered.
