Overview

Max and Grace are best friends. But when Grace shares a secret with Max that makes her feel scared, they begin a brave journey to keep Grace safe and empowered. Together they learn about feelings, warning signs, consent, who they can trust and the power of relationships. Grace's Secret explores the emotional journey that children go through to tell their experiences of trauma. Sadly, not every child has a best friend called Max, instead, many are left to walk this journey alone. We hope through this book that every child can know a friend like Max and find their 'strong voice'. Note: This book does not contain any direct references to abuse. It is suitable for children aged 3-8 years

Author Information

"Lisa Marie is a Qualified Play Therapist, Counsellor, Early Childhood Teacher, Author, and a foster mum, with over 25 years of experience working with children and vulnerable families. Through her work in fields such as Early Childhood services, TAFE Education, and Out of Home Care, Lisa saw a growing need for not only trauma education but also therapeutic services for children in their early years. Gaining her qualifications as a registered play therapist and counsellor, Lisa founded Early Years Wellbeing; a specialised trauma service providing play therapy and support to vulnerable children and families on the far north coast. As the director of Early Years Wellbeing, Lisa discovered that there were limited trauma resources, specifically for children in their early years. With this in mind, Lisa made the decision to close the service after 5 years and focus on her family and developing professional resources that would allow her to fill an increasingly unique need within the community. All too often, it is assumed that children in their early years don't need specialised support in the belief that 'they'll be ok'. When in fact, it is vital that they receive exactly that, in order to achieve positive outcomes throughout the rest of their life.Combining her interests in play, early literacy, and child protection, Lisa completed her Protective Behaviours practitioner training, before taking her knowledge and experience to create 'Graces Grace's Secret'. With a deep understanding of young children who have experienced trauma, Lisa wanted to create a resource that was child-led and allowed professionals and cares to meet the child's needs rather than the needs of the adult.""A child will never tell you their story if you don't first stop, look and listen....."" Rachael is a Paediatric Occupational Therapist as well as the founder and director of POTTS PaediatricPediatric Occupational Therapy. As a Paediatric Occupational Therapist, my work in the community sector has included outreach within client's clients' homes and education services, as well as working with children under the Transport Accident Commission Victoria. My current role sees me working with children who have experienced child sexual assault (CSA) and abuse. As a trauma-informed Occupational therapist, working with children who have experienced sexual assault. I aim to determine how the child's sensory systems, emotions, behaviour, relationships, and functional skills have been impacted by the trauma. We often talk about the impact on the brain stem and, further to this, how this impacts the child's sensory processing. We look at how their body responds to dysregulation and their trauma response, e.g., fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. We also look at the impact of dysregulation within their therapy sessions, home, school, and social life.My therapeutic role is to support clients to develop healthy co-regulation and self-regulation strategies, with the aim to build on attachment with primary caregivers and relationships. In sessions, I recommend strategies to help clients manage dysregulation, so that their there is consistency across all environments of home, kinder, and school. As occupational therapists, our goal is to ensure the child can feel safe and be able to participate in their daily life."
