Centralised administration, new bureaucratic hierarchies, and improved infrastructure and communication, facilitated the rise of non-elite social strata whose status and ideological identification are evident in the thousands of carefully designed tombs that remain from this period. The book traces the development of non-elite funerary structures in the area of modern Luoyang, where the county town Henan and the prefectural city Luoyang (later the capital) were located during the Han period. Lukas Nickel investigates how architects learned to employ low-cost building materials, such as bricks, to erect large chambers, and how patrons gradually made their tombs into representations of functioning households. From his research emerges a detailed picture of funerary culture in an important region of Han period China. The volume includes an extensive English synopsis.
