Gould's Book of Fish is a historical fiction novel based on the history of the Macquarie Harbour Penal Station on the West Coast of Tasmania. It is also of importance in the understanding of the context of Convicts on the West Coast of Tasmania through the life of the convict and artist William Buelow Gould. On the covers of the original hardback edition of 2001 and the subsequent paperback reprints of 2002 and 2003 the 'The Weedy Seadragon' painting by the real Van Diemonian convict artist William Buelow Gould is the dominant image. The cover image, as well as images used on the twelve colour chapter frontispieces in the hardback edition, were reproduced with permission from William Gould's Sketchbook of Fishes, held by the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts, in the State Library of Tasmania.
