Gouache Guide and Tips: New ways to express your creativity with gouache

Overview

Both watercolor and gouache are made from the same basic materials but have important differences. Watercolors have pigments with very small particle sizes. This allows the paint to be spread thinly enough that it is nearly transparent. Gouache on the other side has more body and larger particles. It dries more opaque, appears heavier and denser and is therefore more opaque. It is best to use the paint to create a flat, matte wash of color. Gouache can be used for direct, gestural and action paintings because it dries quickly. Like watercolor, gouache can be re-wetted to bind to the paper. But unlike watercolor, gouache cannot be reduced in water to make them more transparent. Artists cannot use gouache to create layers of color as they can with watercolor. Gouache may not be for you if you're a traditional transparent watercolor painter. Gouache is great for those who like to experiment and play with the process of painting. Because it is very soluble, gouache can be easily adjusted with a damp toothbrush to do this type of reconstructing. Acrylic paint and gouache are different. Acrylic paint is thicker than gouache and more durable - acrylics can withstand dust and light and are waterproof. Acrylics can be used in a variety of mediums including paper, wood and glass as well as plastic. Gouache is better suited for paper. It is not recommended to apply gouache too thickly. This can cause it to crack like oils and acrylics. Acrylics can be applied using other tools than a paintbrush. Acrylic can't be rewet or reworked like gouache. Once it's dried, it can't even be changed (although you can still paint over it). Rewetting gouache can be used to activate the paint again and make adjustments. It is versatile and can be used in many different ways.
