Overview

The first prize winner in dermatology in the 2004 British Medical Association Book Competition, Goodheart's Photoguide of Common Skin Disorders is now in its newly revised Third Edition. This easy-to-use reference helps practitioners quickly diagnose common skin disorders and determine appropriate treatment options. More than 900 full-color photographs - enlarged for greater clarity in this edition - speed diagnosis by showing the distinguishing characteristics of each disorder and providing clear comparisons between similar looking conditions. The book also includes formulary tables of leading topical and systemic agents by generic and brand name; patient handouts in English and Spanish; and, step-by-step descriptions of basic dermatologic procedures. The Third Edition features many new photographs, updated treatment sections, a new chapter on pediatric and geriatric dermatology, and many more patient handouts. The appendix on brand names of dermatologic medications in various countries now includes India and Canada. There is a companion Website that will offer customizable English and Spanish patient handouts, an image bank complete with additional images, and the fully searchable text.

Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), 17-JUN-09, Volume 301, Issue 23, Daniel G. Federman, MD and Eric H. Chanko, MD, VA Connecticut Health Care, West Haven, CT; Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT -- A wonderful and practical resource for those in primary care interested in honing their clinical skills of evaluating and treating...frequently encountered dermatoses. In addition to...abundant and outstanding clinical photographs, chapters contain practical information regarding therapeutic options and conclude with 'Helpful Hints' and 'Points to Remember' text boxes...Clinical pearls...are peppered throughout the book. Another nice feature is that the purchaser is provided with access to an interactive Web site that includes not only online text but also an image bank wherein one can view and download full-color images. Furthermore, the site allows users to print customizable patient education materials in both English and Spanish, which can be an important asset in clinical practice... For years, we have recommended Fitzpatrick's Color Atlas & Synopsis of Clinical Dermatology to medical students, house staff, or other nondermatology physicians interested in a concise, easy-to-use, practical textbook of skin disease. While Fitzpatrick's text includes some rare entities (eg, the porphyrias, Merkel cell carcinoma, mycetoma) not included in Goodheart's, the latter not only covers the common diseases well but has some nice features not included in Fitzpatrick's work. One exceptional feature is that when Goodheart's lists the differential diagnosis, clinical photographs of other entities to be considered are often provided, with short explanations of how to distinguish between them. Another distinctive feature potentially useful to many international physicians is that brand names of common generic dermatologic medications are listed for the United States, France, Germany, United Kingdom, India, and Canada. While dermatologists might be looking for more comprehensive textbooks, nondermatologists seeking an unpretentious, practical, aesthetically appealing, easy-to-use, readable textbook of common skin disorders will not be disappointed by Goodheart's Photoguide to Common Skin Disorders. It is a welcome and valuable addition to our library. -Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)
