In 1990s California, two grieving brothers chase new beginnings, but as love, ambition, and family dysfunction collide, a devastating tragedy forces them to confront the lives they tried to leave behind. In 1995, after the death of their mother, four siblings-Braden, Vince, Ted, and Maggie-make a desperate break from their stagnant lives in upstate New York, heading west to California in search of reinvention. But the Golden State offers little gold: in Oakland, they move into a cramped house with their sister Debbie, taking low-wage jobs and clinging to fading dreams of artistic success.
