Table of ContentsReviewsMost people when they do have a compulsion usually embrace it and try to live with it, or they feel guilty, try hide it, and make excuses for it. I have done both. Such dynamics can become love hate relationships. Getting hungry enough for change is necessary to defeat our compulsions. But this is not enough. Many people have gone before us, and it is prudent to be teachable in their presence when they point to and advise us on how to connect with God in ways for hope, and spiritual life to be birthed in us so that our compulsions can be defeated. This book helps to defeat stagnancy by going deeper in the spirit of The Twelve Steps. Lafaut (To Be Broken Into Freedom) delivers an intriguing spiritual analysis of the 12 Step Program for addiction treatment in this compact guide, offering readers constructive ways to meet their needs and establish sobriety. He highlights how to apply spiritual principles to recovery-such as developing a healthy two-way relationship with God alongside increasing the practice of heartfelt prayer-and outlines actions for readers to turn personal weaknesses into strengths. Lafaut advocates strongly for the 12 Step approach but lays out his own interpretation of these steps based on Christian principles, writing that Faith focused people go farther than those who are purely knowledge focused. Though his writing can be abstract at times, Lafaut consistently circles back to the importance of a close dependence on God in order to break free from addiction, and much of his text focuses on the need for forgiveness of self and others. He breaks down challenging concepts by sharing his own experiences and emphasizing the spiritual roots behind addictive behaviors-including unresolved anger, pride, and guilt-and Christian readers will appreciate his first hand approach to overcoming addiction. Particularly helpful are the suggested prayer outlines Lafaut includes and his attention to dismantling confusing religious terms. Christian readers struggling with addiction will find plenty to think about, and Lafaut dedicates ample space to summarizing his own spiritual explanation of each of the 12 Steps (some steps he spends more time on than others, including step nine, when he explores how to make amends with God's help ). For those who are unfamiliar with the 12 Step Program, Lafaut lists every step in its original form and offers additional resources in the backmatter. His unconditional regard for readers will be a welcome approach, and his caution against judging others is refreshing-as is his encouragement that Overcoming all our challenges doesn't happen overnight. BookLife Review Going Deeper with the Twelve Steps: Following the Spirit of the Steps (Learning to Love) by Rene Lafaut describes our journey to spiritual healing. We grow in faith, hope, love, patience, and being modest as we search for healing. We only need faith as small as a mustard seed to succeed in our struggles and the search for freedom to love, and to learn how to care more deeply for people. Our minds and attitude will be renewed when we develop a healthy two-way relationship with God. The twelve steps are discussed to bring us closer to God and help us to be free from struggles and addictions. When we can recognize God's voice, we will find answers and not have to guess what God wants to say to us. We must become dependent on God through our faith and trust and must be teachable. We have enough work on ourselves to last until our journey comes to an end. The chapters are full of information but I never felt overwhelmed. Lafaut explains what we need to do to grow closer to God and how to apply the twelve steps in our lives. Rene Lafaut's aim in Going Deeper with the Twelve Steps: Following the Spirit of the Steps (Learning to Love) is to help us on our journey to heal and care for others. It has a very strong message of the importance of our relationship with God and that the change to defeat our compulsions and addictions must come from us. This information is a powerful tool in our daily life and helps others with their compulsions and addictions. The book is well written and exceptionally well-edited and I recommend it if you want to change your life and grow closer to God.
