Overview

As the church focuses more and more on growth in urban areas, this book shows how small rural parishes can respond with confidence to the opportunities and challenges for mission and ministry, and that flourishing exists throughout the church, and particularly in small and rural contexts. God’s Tent Pitched Among Us provides a worked example of a thriving rural mission project in Northumberland. It is a handbook for those who would like to develop their own expression of God’s Tent, providing practical encouragement and easy-to-follow outline sessions. It also offers an extended reflection on the powerful image of the tent-pitching God in the book of Exodus and who biblical writers continue to draw on through the book of Revelation, and more notably in the prologue to John’s Gospel.

Reviews

By the very nature of the Tent, worship and environment are brought together in natural and holistic ways. … The author is to be congratulated on his generous sharing of a range of creative ideas. If a rural church or group of churches is looking for a fresh, realistic initiative to develop mission, this book will serve very well. -- James Francis * Rural Theology *

Beautiful. Simple. Profound. Effective. Prophetic. Just a few of the words that come to mind as you read this book and are amplified a hundred-fold when you experience 'Gods' Tent' in action. This gift springs, almost literally, from the lands of Aidan and Cuthbert as the people of God join in the adventure of the Searching Christ and pitch God's tent afresh today. -- The Rt Revd Mark Tanner, Bishop of Berwick A fascinating read. It's a story of exploration and responding to God's call to stay faithful to tradition but also to step out into the new; a real tale of frontiers and the liminal wisdom being found there. Full of creative improvisation, this approach is a rich and exciting encouragement to reimagine church for all ages together and for today's needs, but remaining true to the rich inheritance of our faith. Makes me want to build a yurt and get muddy! -- Lucy Moore, Messy Church founder and team leader at BRF
