OverviewThomas More (1478-1535) was born one year after William Caxton used the movable type printing press to print the first book ever printed on English soil-an edition of Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales. It was an auspicious beginning for a man who would someday become one of the leading Renaissance scholars of his day. More was a man of letters, learning, and law, but he would end his life much more than a scholar and lawyer... Thomas More's early years were spent during the conclusion of the War of the Roses (1455-1485). He was five years old when Richard III ascended the throne, and seven years old when Henry Tudor defeated Richard at the Battle of Bosworth Field and was crowned King Henry VII. Upon Henry's death in 1509, his second son, Henry VIII (r. 1509-1547), began his turbulent and transformative thirty-eight-year reign. More would one day serve as Henry VIII's lord chancellor and eventually be martyred at the insistence of England's intolerant king. Follow Thomas More on his life journey and experience the early Reformation period and the events that led to his glorious death. Yet his story lives on... Thomas More. Servant, martyr, hero, saint.
