Overview

United States Church Membership in all Christian denominations is down sharply in the last 20 years. Adults with no religious affiliation also more than doubled, from 8% to 19%. (Gallup) A 2008 Pew Research Center study found that Catholicism lost more adherents in the late 20th century than any other religion in the United States. The tipping point began in the 1940s and firmly took hold in 1968 after Vatican II. (1962-65) This is not to say that Christianity is in a crisis, but rather that America's Religious institutions are experiencing an identity crisis.
