Overview

The belief in god is what makes us human. We see ourselves as human when we see ourselves as not a god. This has some basis in the Linguistics of Saussure, the Anthropology of Claude Levi-Strauss, and even the philosophy of Jacques Derrida, where meaning comes by contrast. Gods are simply the specific antithesis that allows us to know ourselves as human. Seeing ourselves in terms of others is not a specific human awareness. Animals have the same capacity, even displaying a sense of time. Dogs for example remember us from the past, and look forward to seeing us in the future.
