OverviewThe Glossa Ordinaria was a study Bible/commentary that probably began development around the 12th century. It carried a great deal of authority in the Church and was used heavily by many clergy and theologians for centuries. At this point very little of the Glossa Ordinaria has been translated into English, and in my opinion I feel there is a need for it to be available once again for common use, not only for students curious about Medieval approaches to Biblical exegesis, but especially for the Bible students who appreciate resources that provide a traditional school of thought. And since the Glossa Ordinaria is loaded with quotes from the Early Church Fathers, its perfect for those who have an interest in Patristic commentaries on the Bible! One cannot read Bible commentaries from the great scholastic theologians such as St. Thomas Aquinas without realizing how important the Glossa Ordinaria was to their interpreting the Bible. There is no doubt that the Glossa Ordinaria was the standard Bible commentary of the Church for many years. In this volume of 1-3 John from the Gloss, I have provided the Gloss material in two separate layouts. The first layout is in the way many modern Bible commentaries are laid out, with the Scripture verse and the glosses underneath. Both sets of glosses, the marginal glosses and interlinear glosses are provided for each verse. Then the second layout is styled in the manner that is found in the Gloss manuscripts, having three margins, the Scripture text in the middle while the marginal glosses on each side. I have also followed the traditional Gloss style for the interlinear glosses, which are located right above the Scriptures that they are in reference to. There is an appendix in the back that contains all the variant readings found among the oldest Gloss manuscripts and the versions Rusch and Migne. For this volume, I have used the Rusch version as the standard text, but have followed the readings found in the older manuscripts when variant readings appeared, which makes this a critical edition.
