Glorious Tension: Rediscovering Our Sacred Middle Ground in an Age of Extremism

Overview

Coexistence requires compromise. Ideology may be useful when framing an issue, but it rarely helps resolve one. Unfortunately, it is all too easy to become addicted to remaining in our own closed loop. In Glorious Tension, Paul Hobby cautions against the perils of succumbing to confirmation bias and indulging the sugar-high of extremism. This collection of honest, reasoned essays extols the virtues of reclaiming the middle ground. It is a powerful invitation to substitute reason for tribalism. To succeed as a society, we must overcome the toxic internet nonsense and lazy prattle that pits those with differing ideas against each other. Glorious Tension builds the case for rehabilitating those who have lost their taste for the middle. It offers a vision for minimizing political grandstanding and restoring the processes that deliver peaceful consensus, enabling us to come together to celebrate the things we have in common.

Reviews

"""Paul Hobby is a rare figure in public life today: an entrepreneur, political independent, and tutor of prison inmates. He has written a timely argument for the centrist values of his civic-minded parents and grandparents, as well as his mentor, Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock."" - Dan Goodgame, editor in chief at Texas Monthly, bestselling author & former White House correspondent for Time Magazine ""Glorious Tension takes a sharp and sobering look at the polarizing behaviors that are chipping away at the middle ground between us. In these pages, Paul Hobby explores tough issues head-on-with wit, candor, and compassion-while challenging us to do the very same."" - Darren Walker, President of the Ford Foundation ""Paul Hobby approached a tough subject that plagues us all with wit, wisdom, and some hard hitting messages about our shared condition. He is also ballsy enough to tackle religion, race, wealth disparity, and other delicate, sensitive topics-hard subjects where others fear to tread. We need people like Paul to use every ounce of their intellectual and caring ability to parse through the trickiest problems and find solutions that work for the common good. Readers will find Glorious Tension to be fearless, intelligent, and with the occasional smirk that is refreshing in trying times like these."" - Peter D. Kiernan, former partner at Goldman Sachs & New York Times bestselling author of American Mojo: Lost and Found"
