Known by her pen name ""Lilian Mack,"" Garis wrote for various newspapers, gaining recognition for her work. She married fellow writer Howard R. Garis in 1899, and together, they became one of the most prolific author duos of children's literature. Garis penned numerous books, including the Melody Lane series and Girl Scouts series, many published by the Stratemeyer Syndicate. The couple had two children, Roger and Cleo. In 1951, they moved to Amherst, Massachusetts, where Garis continued her writing until her death on April 19, 1954, in Newark, New Jersey, at the age of 80.
