Overview

Globalization has not only affected all aspects of human life, but it has also influenced social institutions to a great extent. Globalization operates in an uneven and unequal manner. A small minority of the world's population holds maximum resources while a majority of the people struggle in poverty. The State, as an institution, guarantees social welfare and social justice to marginalized groups, but globalization has threatened and weakened this guarantee. In the contemporary context, the social justice agenda has been taken over by non-state organizations. The older theories of social justice, which have become either inadequate or inapplicable, cannot cover the new developments that have taken place in the era of globalization and therefore they have to be reviewed. In India, Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar was the champion of social justice. He not only strived for the social liberation of the marginalized Dalits, but also built a just society by embedding principles of liberty, equality, and fraternity in the preamble of the Constitution of India. His perspective on social justice is relevant in this context. Against this backdrop, Globalization and Social Justice examines the theories and various perspectives regarding social justice in India in the era of globalization.
