OverviewThis volume presents a devastating critique of the currently fashionable idea of globalisation, where the kind of global economy that is in the process of forming is seen as the highest possible form of economy, and the neoliberal economic orthodoxy on which it rests. Global Neoliberalism locates the incoherence of neoliberal policy in the neoclassical theories of distribution and welfare on which it depends. These in turn are based on faulty assumptions about human nature and so are unable to answer the question; ""What leads to a good economic outcome?"". Alternative egalitarian theories of welfarism from heterodox economics and political philosophy, especially those of Amartya Sen, are shown to provide a n adequate normative framework for assessing economic outcomes. This volume interrogates whether any global economic mode of distribution can be proposed given the cultural and value diversity in the world. George DeMartino develops an internationalist ethic that tolerates cultural diversity while resisting oppression. This is compared to global neoliberalism whose apparent respect for cultural diversity in socio-economic arrangements leads to an imperialism of free market culture. The author concludes by looking at how an egalitarian internationalism based on Sen's principle of ""capabilities equality"" might look in practice. Global Liberalism's clear and non-technical style will enable economics students to grasp distributive theories of political philosophy and political philosophy students economic theories of welfarism. It is unique in discussions of globalisation in its focus on the neoclassical foundations of global neoliberal policy prescriptions. Table of ContentsReviewsGlobal Economy, Global Justice should be quite useful for upper-level undergraduates or master's level courses in international relations and the global economy. -Paul Burkett New Political Science. Vol.24, No. 1 This is an extraordinarily creative and comprehensive book. It traces the theoretical roots of the current widespread celebration of the market, offers an alternative perspective that can far better serve the campaign for global justice, and provides a series of concrete policy reforms to promote global equality. Any one of these accomplishments is significant and much needed. Together, they offer a masterful synthesis as well as a provocative call to action one that must be heeded by proponents and critics of neoliberalism alike. -Julie Graham, Professor, University of Massachusetts George De Martino has written a fantastic book! It is simply the best available analysis of the neo-liberal package of ideas, which have so far guided (and deformed) globalization. By offering lucid criticism and alternatives, De Martino also offers readers an excellent perspective on global economic reform. -Richard Falk, Albert G. Milbank Professor of International Law and Practice, Princeton University When all the hype surrounding globalization finally settles down, it is books like Global Economy, Global Justice that will prove most influential. DeMartino has put the phenomenon of globalization in philosophical and political perspective, without presuming that his own views are value free. The book also provides some creative solutions to the ethical dilemmas raised by globalization. I strongly recommend Global Economy, Global Justice for anyone seeking abalanced perspective on the rapid changes occurring in the world economy today. -William Milberg, Chair, Department of Economics, New School for Social Research Global Economy, Global Justice should be quite useful for upper-level undergraduates or master's level courses in international relations and the global economy. <br>-Paul Burkett New Political Science.
