OverviewGlaucoma is a group of eye diseases that affect the outflow of a fluid called aqueous humor from the eye. This fluid fills the front part of the eye, nourishing the lens and cornea and removing harmful waste. When this fluid cannot drain properly, it leads to high pressure inside the eye, damaging the optic nerve. The main early symptom of glaucoma is increased intraocular pressure (IOP). Normally, IOP is between 18 and 24 mm Hg. Glaucoma is usually present if the pressure rises above 25 mm Hg. If not treated, the high pressure damages the retina and optic nerve, leading to vision problems. Over time, this can cause loss of peripheral (side) vision and eventually blindness.
