Giving Our Children Wings: A Step-by-Step Guide to Positive Parenting

Overview

Who needs this book? ""Billy, stop teasing your sister!"" ""Susan, I told you half an hour ago to clean your room!"" ""Juan, I've told you and told you that you need to finish your homework before you play video games."" Does any of this sound familiar? If so, this book is for you! As a parent or caregiver, how many times do you find yourself repeatedly correcting your children if they continue misbehaving? There is a more effective, less frustrating way to deal with children. This book is for anyone who wants to balance their corrections with positive comments, reduce their children's misbehaviors and increase children's desire to listen to you. As your children's behavior improves, you will experience less stress and more peace and harmony in your home. The book includes more than thirty true stories, and over twenty strategies. The stories describe how to use these techniques to resolve behavior and learning problems, many of which were long-standing and very trying. Only the names have been changed. These tools can be used with children who understand basic language concepts-ages three or four and older. By using even one of these tools, such as The Art of Positive Noticing (See Part I) or Positive Contingencies (See Part 3), your children's defensiveness will lessen, and their listening and cooperation will increase. The information in this book strengthens many kinds of relationships and helps to keep them intact. For that reason, although most of these stories are about children, there are two that describe how to use these positives strategies with employees and spouses. A behavior is a behavior wherever it occurs-and it benefits us all to know that similar misbehaviors can be handled similarly, no matter where they take place.

Author Information

Dolores taught preschool, elementary school and middle school. After receiving her Master's Degree in educational psychology and reading instruction at the University of Illinois, she began training teachers throughout the country in beginning reading strategies. She worked in the Bronx, Southside Chicago, Flint Michigan, Tupelo Mississippi and East Las Vegas, New Mexico. She later coordinated teacher training for a large county office of education in northern California for ten years. Dolores then developed her own positive behavior management programs and taught them at three major universities. As the only freelance female behavior-management consultant in Northern California at the time, she had to be able to ""walk the walk"" when it came to demonstrating the power of these positive strategies. After deliberately putting herself in many difficult classrooms in order to refine her knowledge and learn as much as possible, she became able to help struggling teachers bring their classes to order through positive means--and she also became able to help many teachers retain their employment. In addition, teachers who were achieving good results with their children found that these strategies reduced their fatigue and stress. As she continued learning what to say and how and when to say it, she began teaching these strategies to teachers throughout the western United States, and she continues doing this. As bringing difficult classes to order became easier, she began getting requests to share these strategies with parents. She is now doing this. During the past nine years, she has worked in many homes and with hundreds of children who have received diagnoses such as ADHD and ODD. And she has also worked extensively with children with learning problems such as dyslexia, an inability to pay attention and an inability to read well. In addition, she has helped countless parents learn how to discipline their children positively; thereby reducing negative interactions among them and also strengthening family ties. While working in home situations, parents have been greatly relieved to find that they can get along far better with their children than they thought possible--and also that, in some cases, children can function more normally than before. She has now brought the positive strategies and tools in this book for parents. The over thirty true stories found throughout, as well as the parent testimonials that appear in this book, show the power of what she has learned. Her hope is that parents and their children will be able to interact harmoniously, and that our children will be able to reach their true potential. Her goal is that we will all be able to ""Give our Children Wings.""
