Overview

Giving Away the Planet is a 'deep history' of economic development, by a well-known social historian. It draws on the new research by archaeologists and evolutionary scientists who have revolutionised our view of human evolution over the last decade. They have shown that humans are 'super-producers' for the benefit of their group. This confirms Adam Smith's belief, although modern economic historians have rejected this part of Smith's theory. 'Greed' can no longer be used to explain human materialism. The author shows that our highly productive and innovative faculties were diverted towards materialism by climate change which converted egalitarian foragers into hierarchically-organised farmers. He demonstrates how we can still pursue economic growth while making our economy sustainable again.
