Excerpt from Gilds: Their Origin, Constitution, Objects and Later History After my husband's death, in going through the mass of inc0m plete material gathered together for the various works on which he was engaged, I found that the mss. Relating to History of Gilds (then being published monthly in T HE antiquarian Magazine) was in a very forward state and I consulted Miss Toulmin Smith, with a view to obtaining her valuable assistance towards the completion of the work. I was, however, reluctantly obliged to abandon this idea, in order to complete, if possible, two still more important works - viz., the Insurance Cyclopaedia and the History of Periodical Literature, on which the author had spent a vast amount of labour and research, extending over (i think) the last twenty years of his life. Eventually I decided, with the help of my husband's cousin, Mr. Edward Walford, in whose Magazine, as before stated, the enlarged reprint of Gilds was being published, to finish the work from the material which I had in hand, with as little alteration or addition as possible. This has now been done, and these few words of explanation must be my apology for the somewhat abrupt conclusion of the work. The last Chapter written entirely by my husband contained the completion of the Gilds of Somerset Chapter XLII.
