Overview

This is Anne Bradford's seventh collection of true ghost stories from the Worcestershire area, she has been collecting eye-witness accounts of strange events since 1992, when she was inspired by a Victorian collection of ghost stories in the archives of her local library. Illustrated by Glenn James with drawings which have a gothic interest and a bohemian streak, each chapter deals with a specific region with anecdotal narratives of unexplained phenomena. The many short stories include The Powick Poltergeist (Worcester), The Hound of Cofton Lane (The Lickey Hills), Faggots and Phantom Footsteps (Upton-on-Severn) and The Growling Ghost (Bordesley Abbey).

Reviews

Late on Christmas Eve a few years ago, one of the locals had a fright when he was driving from Cookhill to Alcester. He says: Suddenly, I saw what looked like a nurse in a grey cape with a hood. She stepped right out in front of me. There was no chance of my stopping, I screamed and hit the brakes. I stopped and went back to have a look but there was no trace of anything. There wasn't a mark on the car. I'm not certain what it was but it certainly wasn't solid as I went straight through it and there was no bang. I have very good lights on my car, I have very good eyesight and I'm not the kind of person to believe in that sort of thing. If tins had happened after I had been to the pub you could understand it but it happened when I was on my way to the pub. I found it quite upsetting. You think you have had an accident. A friend of ours is a nurse and she told us that she was working at the hospital in Worcester when a lorry driver was taken in who had an accident at that same spot. He said that he had swerved to avoid a grey nun. The strange thing was, that this also happened on Christmas Eve but the following year.
