Ghost of Galveston: A True Family Story of War, Loss, and Survival

Overview

A true Southern family saga of war, outlaw legend, and survival across generations. In August of 1856, William Dewit Taylor was born in Jackson County, Tennessee. His childhood should have been simple-farm life, family, and a future rooted in the land. But history had other plans. In August of 1861, Will's father, Amos Taylor, left with recruiters from Carthage, Tennessee, traveled to Nashville, and joined the Confederate infantry. Emeline Taylor waited for her husband to return... but the letters never came. Years passed with no word and no grave. When she finally saw Amos' name printed in a newspaper, the mystery deepened-and the silence grew heavier. After Emeline died in 1870, Will headed west, chasing a life he could control. He passed through Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and ended up on the run. He later settled near Swifton, Arkansas, trying to build something steady. In 1892, he traveled to Iron Mountain, Missouri, took a wife named Mary A. Walker, and brought her back to Arkansas. Together they had three sons: Dewit, Frank, and James. But Will was gone too often, living in the shadows of outlaw life. Then he ended up in a Galveston jail. A hurricane struck. Will escaped in the chaos and was presumed dead-yet the truth was even stranger. He survived, disappeared into Indian Territory, and became a ghost in the family's history. Tragedy followed the next generation. Dewit hanged himself. James died from poisoned whiskey. Frank survived-and raised ten children, carrying the Taylor name forward when it would have been easy to let it end. Ghost of Galveston: A True Family Story of War, Loss, and Survival is more than a tale of hardship-it is the story of how a family endured, how legacies are shaped by both absence and strength, and how survival itself can become an inheritance.
