OverviewIn cultural studies, imperial situations are increasingly viewed as culturally complex spaces of possibility. So far, little attention has been paid to the relationship between subjective-individual and 'collective' concepts of belonging, as well as the question of how self-designs and those of others are negotiated in imperial contexts. Apparently homogeneous sizes such as nation or region can at most be of partial importance. In the context of imperial experiences, cultural identities are historically and lifeworldly ""stratified""; they show features of the simultaneity of different time and experience spaces - and they are constituted and reflected not least in narratives The focus is on the regions of Eastern and Southeastern Europe, which have particularly rich and varied experiences in building European identities in imperial contexts.
