OverviewDavid Cranz (17231777), the first historian of the Moravian Brethren, was a preacher of the church from 1771 until his death. He experienced the dawn of evangelical life in Silesia under the Hohenzollerns, but also had to experience the distrust of the Prussian government against the excessive influence of the Moravians in the Oderland. The extensive manuscript by Cranz, a close collaborator of Zinzendorf, was initially only intended for use within the Brothers' Union and therefore remained unpublished. This historical-critical edition makes this impressive testimony of brotherly historiography from the Age of Enlightenment, which informs about the actors and everyday practice of the Moravian piety in the east of the Roman-German Empire, available in print for the first time.
