Overview

The former Benedictine monastery church of St Michael on Michelsberg is one of Bamberg’s most significant monuments, both historically and artistically, and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the episcopal city of Bamberg. In 2012, the building was in acute danger of collapse, which made it necessary to close the church and initiate one of the most extensive restoration campaigns in the building’s history. This volume brings together more than 30 articles that shed light on the extraordinary restoration of St Michael’s from a variety of perspectives. They trace the individual stages of the restoration, explain the complex tasks, decisions, and challenges involved, and present new findings from building research, archaeology, art history, and conservation science.
