OverviewErna von Kgelgen, the author of this book, was one of the estimated two and a half million Germans that lived in Russia in the early 20th century. Her story begins shortly after the outbreak of World War 1, a war that pitted the mighty German and Russian empires against each other. Erna and her young family suddenly found themselves caught up in a terrible whirlwind of events. This book was originally published in German and is now available in English for the first time. Set in a time of intense nationalism, war, revolution and social change, it is a profoundly personal story and yet provides some deep and sometimes quite surprising insights into many of the key issues of the time, some of which are still relevant today. Well-educated and cultured, Erna takes us on a journey from her very privileged life in St. Petersburg, sophisticated capital of the Russian empire, to the harsh and vast landscapes of Siberia, and into the world of the mysterious and semi-nomadic Bashkirs. It is the story of her and her family's incredible struggle to return to her homeland in spite of horrific wars and revolution. The English translation contains additional background information, maps, photographs and drawings that bring the story even more to life for the 21st century reader. It also contains a brief update on what happened to the family in the intervening years.
