Geopolitical Political Rivalries for Africa's Natural Resources: West and East Collision in Africa

Overview

Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 5 (A), Collegium Civitas (Department of Political Science), course: Contemporary African Politics, language: English, abstract: The paper explores the astronomical economic growth of the emerging global power, China compared to the West, with resultant effects on Africa. China's economy growth leapes into the top 10 economies in the world; something unimaginable a decade ago. Forecasts suggest China will become the world's leading economy in few decades from now. The paper articulates that economic growth corresponds to the rising quest for natural resources (raw materials, and mineral resources). It also posit that the Beijing Summit of the China-Africa Cooperation held in 2006 was very paramount for the China's breakthrough in Africa. The China-African Cooperation brought 48 African governments closer to the Chinese leadership, the first of its kind, served new synergies where strategic partnership that lay emphasis on mutual trust, political equality, cultural cooperation and the win-win economic collaboration were earmarked. While the paper views the China-Africa engagement in positive light, it nevertheless criticizes some aspects of China's role in Africa. Areas like Human right abuses with reference to Darfur-Sudan, promotion of dictatorship regimes and dubious economic activities like good dumping. The paper concludes that as far as the world economic is shifting hands from the West to the East; prompting huge domestic demands and consumption in Asia, an attempt by the West to contain China in Africa will remain a mere illusion. Conclusion is drawn by highlighting how Africa could strategies and position itself to derive the maximum benefits from the crumble.
