OverviewGeomembranes are synthetic impermeable sheets placed in contact with soil to contain or restrain the movement of gases or liquids. The tremendous worldwide growth in the use of geomembranes in transportation, environmental and geotechnical applications has led to an urgent need for agreed standards covering their properties and use. Few standards exist and practically no harmonization at international level has been achieved. This book puts forward for the first time recommended procedures for identification, characterization and testing of the materials themeselves, and of the procedures for joining them. It has been prepared by an international committee of experts under the auspices of RILEM (the International Union of Testing and Research Laboratories for Materials and Structures). It will be of value to geotechnical and environmental engineers, manufacturers of geomembranes, those involved in research into and standardization of geomembranes and testing organizations.
