Overview

Geography is often neglected in schools when it comes to its significance in the world. In elementary students learn about counties, cities, countries, and capitols. In middle school and junior high students learn about mountains, rivers, tropical rain forests, and deserts. In high school they learn all of it over again. In college it is often left out of most programs. There is often only a brief period in history class where teachers will cover the geography of the United States, the world, or the state where the students live. In many states geography is only required for a half a year. But there is so much more to geography than maps. In ancient times the study of geography was the most important subject because of trade and exploration. It meant life or death and the rise and fall of nations. Today it is integrated into our lives only we do not know about it. Whenever we use electronic maps, check the weather, plan for a trip, move to a new location, or plan things at our jobs we are using geography. It is an integral part to every subject at school. It is the catalyst in developing programs where students can problem solve, and obtain higher thinking skills.
