General equipment needed to run these labs: Thermal cycler (PCR machine); preferably with a 96 well head, Pipettes: Typically a set of three (2-20, 20-200, 200-1,000 l) per two to three students, Small microfuges (usually 600 rpm speed) with 1.5 - 2.0 ml tube and 0.2 ml PCR strip rotors, Tabletop centrifuge (usually capable of 14,000 rpm) with a 1.5/2.0 ml tube rotor. Electrophoresis power supply and gel rig with matching trays and combs. UV documentation system10X dissecting scopes for prokaryote phenotype identification (project 3; 1 per 6 students recommended)Tabletop heat block or water bath, General lab supplies such as beakers, microwave, glassware, etc. Approximate cost $25 per student can be reduced if needed, but is not recommended.
