OverviewThe mémoire as a term and concept is omnipresent in the 19th century. Its network of meanings is multifaceted, as it extends equally into discourses about psyche, identity, perception, imagination and conception - discourses in which painting also participates. For the first time, the meaning of the term mémoire is now being developed for painting, whereby its role in the historical understanding of imagery, feeling and form comes into focus.
