Gastrointestinale Stromatumoren (GIST) sind mit ca. 80 % die häufigsten Sarkome des Gastrointestinaltrakts. Weltweit werden jährlich 10 - 20 Neuerkrankungen / 1 Million Einwohner diagnostiziert, wobei geografische Unterschiede auffallen. Das mediane Alter zum Zeitpunkt der Diagnose liegt zwischen dem 65. - 70. Lebensjahr (Bereich zwischen 16 - 94 Jahre). Männer und Frauen sind in der Gesamtpopulation nahezu gleich häufig betroffen. Sehr selten können GIST bei Neugeborenen und im Kindes- und Jugendalter (1 - 2 %) meist multilokulär auftreten; wobei doppelt so viele Mädchen wie Jungen betroffen sind.
