O'Neil, M.D. -- This is an update of a color atlas/text for gastrointestinal pathology in adult and pediatric patients last published in 1997. The book aspires to be a comprehensive resource that covers the normal anatomy and histology, epidemiology, and the clinical, pathologic, and prognostic features of all gastrointestinal diseases, thereby eliminating the need to consult multiple sources to gain an understanding. For the most part, these lofty objectives are met. This will be useful to pathologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, internists, and surgeons interested in gastrointestinal diseases. The book integrates pathologic analyses of specimens with anatomic, clinical, radiologic, pathophysiologic, and microbiologic information to give readers in any specialty or at any level of training a clear understanding of each disease process. Dr. Fenoglio-Preiser is an internationally renowned pathologist who has specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of GI disease for more than 30 years. Chapters cover non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions of each anatomic site as well as disorders affecting multiple anatomic sites. This edition includes updates on mesenchymal tumors, motility disorders, and inflammatory bowel disease as well as information on molecular genetics in various disorders. Also, it pays more attention to cytology and endomucosal resection specimens due to the emergence and evolution of imaging and endoscopic techniques. The plentiful illustrations include gross and microscopic photographs, drawings, diagrams, and radiographs and there are many tables for quick reference. A companion website offers the fully searchable text and an image bank. While the tables and text are outstanding, numerous microscopic photographs are pale, out of focus, and substandard for a book of this caliber. Overall, this is a fantastic, all encompassing book of gastrointestinal pathology. The new edition is necessary to incorporate new molecular genetic information, prognostic and therapeutic information, and imaging and endoscopic techniques. Except for the poor quality of some of the histopathologic images, this is an impressively complete resource of gastrointestinal pathology. Weighted Numerical Score: 91 - 4 Stars!
