OverviewFirst published in 1999, this second of two volumes intends to equip the reader with a comprehensive guide to the contents of the Encyclopedie of Diderot and D'Alembert through provision of the complete texts of all the principal writings on garden and landscape subjects contained in the seventeen folio-volumes of the first edition of the Encyclopedie. The book adopts a two-part format. Part I provides contextual information concerning the lives of Diderot and D'Alembert and their joint editorship, an outline of the publication history and reproductions of 29 engravings selected from Volume I together with their accompanying texts. Part II consists of an annotated translation into English of the letterpress articles on garden and landscape subjects as extracted from the original seventeen volumes of text, notes concerning the editorial principles adopted, a list of the editor-compilers who contributed writings on garden and landscape subjects, an inventory of all the letterpress articles with the headwords provided in English and French, and a French-English glossary.
