Overview

One clear day in March, the off-grid O'Brien family, obtains critical information confirming the profound scale and gravity of an unexpected power outage of which the public is mostly unaware. A double CME event has spawned a widespread, apocalyptic loss of power, and the family must find a way to warn others of the growing disaster before chaos breaks out. Encouraged by his intuitive wife Kate and the sagacious daughter-in-law Ling, Sean O'Brien plants a seed in the local farm community they hope will germinate into cooperative effort to grow food and survive as long as a year with the grid down and no outside assistance. A diverse mix of eccentric village characters are challenged to work together to use their practical skills and strong farming traditions, to attempt to survive, while having to repeatedly defend their small rural town from anarchists.

The author is a war veteran and retired aerospace engineer who specialized in investigating critical aircraft component problems/failures. He has had a passion for nature and science all his life, with much of his childhood spent researching and collecting anything that turned his head. As a licensed amateur radio operator, he became familiar with the effects of solar weather on radio propagation. This led him to realize the variety of ways a worst case, widespread, coronal mass ejection (CME) could affect modern society and its individuals-for better or worse. He lives in the woods with his wife Jan, enjoying the nature around them.
