Overview

Malcolm and Eileen had cleverly managed to pull off a free wedding as part of a wrap-up party of a movie shoot - with their family cast as extras - courtesy of Eileen's mother and manager, Edythe. Then the intoxicated stars of the movie convinced Malcolm's Aunt Mildred to lend them her limousine for an evening of fun afterwards. Her first instinct was to decline, but she didn't want them to spoil the reception. They did far more than that as it turned out. Underage Eileen had been performing at a speakeasy called the Lucky Lady, where one of the stars wanted to try out a solo act. He'd even signed a one-day contract, which the studio had nullified, but a sleazy opportunist had infiltrated the club and dropped a tip to a gossip columnist that he'd be there, so the place was packed. When the four stars arrived, they created havoc as they signed autographs, and it only got worse when they took the stage. And then the club got raided. Not only that, but there was money missing. Now, speakeasies didn't exist in a vacuum. There were a lot of people supplying illegal liquor, paying off cops, moving things around, and working in the place, either as the entertainment or as waitstaff. So, when things got shut down, the money stopped coming in, and that meant people were unhappy. Very unhappy. Because the stars had caused the problem, and the studios were still making movies, the gangsters saw an opportunity to take a cut of the action as payment for their losses. The studio bosses wanted no part of it, but somebody was going to have to pay.
