Gambling Addiction in Women: Gender-sensitive perspectives on diagnosis, progression, treatment, and prevention

Overview

Gambling addiction in women remains invisible for a long time. It does not fit common stereotypes, often escalates quietly and is frequently only recognised once psychological, social or financial damage has already become profound. This specialist book closes a central gap in research, practice and public debate by consistently analysing gambling disorders from a gender-sensitive perspective. In a scientifically sound yet generally understandable way, the book shows why women gamble differently, why their motives are often overlooked, and what role emotional regulation, trauma, care work, social role models and economic dependencies play in this. It combines neurobiological, psychological, social and public health-oriented approaches to form an integrative overall picture and makes it clear that female gambling addiction is rarely an expression of risk-taking, but often a covert coping strategy in a daily life of chronic overload. In addition to causes and progression patterns, the book takes a detailed look at the individual consequences for mental health, relationships, parenthood and financial stability. It analyses modern gambling products, digital design and marketing strategies just as critically as existing gaps in care provision. Particular emphasis is placed on trauma-informed treatment, recovery concepts, prevention and international best practice models. Bremen University Press has published over 5,000 specialist books in various languages since 2005. January 2026
