OverviewGabriela and The Widow is a lyrical coming-of-age novel set against the violence, mythology, and spiritual undercurrents of Mexico. It follows Gabriela, a fourteen-year-old girl fleeing the devastation of her home village after a brutal war, and La Viuda (""The Widow""), an aging, enigmatic woman who takes Gabriela into her home and gradually into her inner world. The novel explores the deepening relationship between the two women. Gabriela becomes La Viuda's caretaker, but the role quickly expands-she is also chosen to curate the widow's memories, objects, photographs, and the intimate, often mystical stories that make up her life. Their daily rituals become a kind of apprenticeship in remembrance, identity, and transformation. Table of ContentsReviews""Remick laces Spanish and English dialogue, crusted agéd skin and voluptuous beauty, bloody violence and exquisite tenderness. As he blurs boundaries we are sucked into this story, chapter by chapter, until we too transform, we too feel we have glimpsed the answer to immortality's riddles. Gabriela and The Widow is sure to hook readers who enjoy a well told and fascinating story where all the gem-like details fall together to form a rich and satisfying puzzle."" -Paula Lowe, editor, Solo Novo Magazine The plot is complex and filled with revenge, sometimes sadness, and a level of mystery and intrigue that only a well versed and experienced author could accomplish. Not many can create a world with both people and bizarre creatures like overgrown toads and vile monsters and turn the work into a masterpiece. Although some might not enjoy this story, the reader would be lax if he or she could not acknowledge the skill and talent of the author in weaving this complex story in such a direct and graphic way. It is a master tale by a master talent. (Terri Forehand: RN Children's Author) Visit the author at www.jackremick.com for more information on this author and poet.
